Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsI hate to bear bad news, but currently the situation is still very bad in
Pensacola. There are still boats anchored in Bayou Chico--(before Ivan there
were only occasional transcient boats anchored here). Seville harbor is
partly repaired and accepting transcients. Downtown (Palafox pier) is not yet
started and the leasesee is working on his own marina (Bahia Mar) first.
Bahai Mar will be done in a few weeks. Pensacola Yacht club is fixed, but
there is a long waiting list. Pensacola Ship Yard Marine Complex--some of the
docks are fixed and the launching ramp is in business--but not much room to
park. There are at least 300 boats on the hard here--maybe closer to 400. A
new yard next to Patty's shipyard is also in existance--and has over 200
boats.
The list for repairs is long and I could not give you any idea of an estimate.
The best people are spoken for at least a year ahead. In fact they have not
yet started working on their own boats. There are still several dozen boats
in peoples yards--50 or more feet from the water. Island Cove Marina is full.
Brown's Marina and shipyard is full and not fully repaired. Private docks
have waiting lists. Rod and Reel and Southwind Marinas have been sold for
Condo construction.--so that elimates about 100 + slips permently. Grand
Lagoon YC is rebuilding. The places on the Beach are rebuilding. Holiday
Harbor seems to be pretty much back in business--they may well be the best
bet--also Dog River Marina seems faster than Pensacola's yards. Some of the
folks here are going up to Delompolis for work.
The predictions are that Pensacola Beach will not be back to "normal" until
2006. Currently there is talk of moving or canceling the July Blue Angels
show. Not enough resconstuction to be safe on the beach. If we have any sort
of a storm this years--all bets are off.
Having said all of that--please contact me when you are near--and I will do
the best I can to find a place for a looper and if work is necessary we can
find people to do the work. Unfortunately I can only accomidate shoal draft
vessels at my own dock with our new (3 years) home.
Now if you want to buy a hurricane damaged boat....there are some folks who
bit off more than they can chew....And the paradox is that waterfront property
has appreciated greatly in value--figure that.

Bob Austin
