The Cruiseair AC reverse cycle heat pump on our boat quit over the weekend.
I estimate it to be at least 15 years old so it has lasted a long time. I
have been searching the internet looking for best AC units now as I know there
have been significant improvements in these systems.
The two things that I didn't like with the existing unit was that it was too
loud and that it was hard to get the temperature adjusted correctly, i.e., you
turned the rotary temperature switch clockwise to have the pump stay on
longer making it cooler (or counter clockwise to make it warmer) but there was no
ability to set it to a specific temperature and have it be maintained near that
level.
So, in looking at a replacement, I want one that is quieter and has a digital
thermostat. I don't know the BTU rating of the existing unit but using one
of the calculators available on-line, it looks like a 12,000 BTU unit would
meet cooling and heating requirements on our 30' boat. I am replacing an
existing unit so the pump and ducting are already installed, as is the electrical
wiring. I noticed a variance in the electrical requirements of different brands
and as I have just a 30-amp panel, I also want an AC unit that is on the
lower end of power consumption and is energy-efficient. The unit will have to fit
in the available space so size is important; however, I would expect that
most units built now would be smaller than my 15-year old unit.
I also saw one brand that highlighted electrical heat as being better than
reverse cycle heat. The listed reasons were: Extended component life as
compressor and raw water pump not used for heat; and electric heat not dependent on
water temperature - reverse cycle heat will not work when raw water temp is
below about 45-50 degrees.
Replacement AC / heat requirements:
- Quiet operation
- Digital thermostat
- Energy efficient / low power consumption
- Warranty period
Anything else I should consider?
Brands that I have been researching so far include the following:
- Cruisair
- Mermaid
- Flagship Marine
- Mini-Kool
What other brands should I consider?
Thanks for any recommendations you may have.
