Visitors:
We thank today's observers for their efforts and those interested in the
ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level
of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The
2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe
precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
Temperatures were mild today with a low of 1 and a high of 4 C during
observation hours. The morning consisted of clear skies with a
west-north-westerly wind. The afternoon conditions shifted to overcast,
stronger west-south-westerly winds and reduced visibility.
Raptor Observations:
Today consisted of a few nice surprises, thanks in part to the favourable
winds in the morning. Today's raptors consisted of 2 Turkey Vultures, 16
Northern Harrier, 2 Sharpies, 4 Cooper's, 2 Red Shouldered, 24 Red Tails,
and 3 Bald Eagles. We were delighted to also see 5 Golden Eagles throughout
the mid morning and a light morph Rough Legged during the mid morning as
well. Despite the strong start for Harriers/Golden Eagles and prays of a
Swainson's Hawk, the last recorded raptor of the season was a Red Tail! It
was a pleasure to be your Hawk Counter for this migration Season!
Non-raptor Observations:
Standard day for non-raptors with diverse marsh species present and an
improvement in songbird abundance. The decline in Ring-Necked duck,
Northern Shoveler, and American Coot continues in the marsh, while on the
lake, Common Goldeneye and Canvasback are increasing in abundance. American
Goldfinch movement continues to be high, today at 245.
