Visitors:
We thank today's observers for their efforts and those interested in the
ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level
of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The
2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe
precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
A cold day with strong wind from the west, with a small north element and
overcast skies. Temperatures were below 0c all day, with a significant wind
chill. Visibility was good.
Raptor Observations:
Only a few Red-tailed hawks (24) combined with single Sharp-shinned Hawk,
Red-shouldered Hawk and Turkey Vulture
Non-raptor Observations:
Ducks again dominate the list, with numbers variable - lots of Mallards
(1140) and Ring-necked Duck (2220) but Northern Shoveler and American
Wigeon were absent today. Most ducks were sheltering on the north side of
the Marsh. Goldeneye (8) were again seen on the lake and there was a
flyover of Common Merganser (5). Two Great Egrets linger on. Very few other
birds - American Goldfinch (51) the only songbird seen. The list is at

Predictions:
Another cold start tomorrow, but the wind is lighter generally from the
south. Snow possible in the afternoon. Hopefully the lighter wind will
result in similar or greater numbers than today. With luck the snow may
arrive later in the afternoon than presently forecast.
