If you have the option, particularly for remote/offshore use, pick a gear that
has a forward lockdown screw. At least you can make headway, even with a fried
clutch pack. Some gears have it and some don't, read your transmission manual,
seems like Paragon, Borg Warner velvet drive, (it's been awhile since I read
those manuals) and some others have it. You just screw the bolt down to "real
tight", start the engine and go. Stopping requires killing the engine (no
reverse) and kinda crashing, but it beats drifting or being towed.


Your friends are close to you. Keep them that way.

I am pretty sure that neither of those drives have the lock down. Some
of the Twin Disc units do. This was worked over in the Trawler Forum a
couple of years ago.
