Here we are on the Pacific side. It is all uphill from now. The trip through
was like going to four different doctors offices starting at 4 in the
afternoon and ending at 4 in the morning. There is no hurry here.
It all started at four in the afternoon when Wayne took the dinghy to the
yacht club dinghy dock and ferried 4 line handlers with their 4- 125' 1 inch
lines. Two trips. Que Linda was anchored in the flats which is a small boat
anchoring area close to the lock entrance. Without a pilot the wait through
is between 2 and 3 weeks..... with a pilot, 2-3 days. We waited for
the Pilot who was
supposed to arrive at 5. He showed at 6:30 and we finally raised the anchor.
we followed a smaller 450' ship , a tug, and a small harbor cruise ship to
the Gatun lock. We tied up against the cruise ship Pacific Queen for the
locking. There are 3 tiers going up about 20' each . We exited the locks at
9:30 and began our 30 mile trip through the lake and cuts to he San Miguel
lock. The channel is very very well marked and we made our way passing a few
ships to the next lock. It was a very easy transit against the wall at 1 in
the morning. Next was the 2 tiered Miraflores locks and then the Pacific.
This time we tied side by side to a tug. Piece of cake. Out of the lock at
0240 and finally tied to the Flamingo Marina at 0400.
The trip through was very enjoyable except for the night time which was hot
and muggy, and reduced visibility due to haze and darkness. Very bad for
pictures. No moon either. We fell into a coma at 5 AM and didn't come to
until 10.
The disappointing thing about the marina is lack of power and internet. We
moved to the fuel dock and took on 1600 plus gallons of fuel at 2.35 a
gallon. There is power there so we are staying put. I sure wish they gave
green stamps. A funny thing about new marinas They build the docks say they
are open and then go to work on the rest of it.
We are replacing a coupling on the main engine power take off which powers
the hydraulics for the bow thruster and anchor and doing some preventive
maintenance on the Air Conditioner. Caps because it is very important.
Now it is Saturday morning and we will try to find an internet place and do
some shopping. Funny thing about the internet. When you don't have it, it
feels like something is missing... about like you don't have any underwear
on.
