You make a good point Bob.  For the first time I got the outside organization solicitation letter for my renewal and went to the site you reference to do my renewal but did not complete it yet.  It is important to note the following comment on the USCG renewal site-  CODs renewed more than 60 days prior to expiration will be issued with a new issue/expiration date, shortening validity period of document. CODs renewed 60 days or less from expiration will maintain the same expiration month. My expiration date was more than 60 days away so I will do mine closer to the due date to get the full term from the existing registration.
