Be sure you have the most recent.  "CRUISING THE NEW YORK CANAL SYSTEM"  by
Skipper Bob  and  RICHARDSONS CRUISING GUIDE HUDSON RIVER AND ADJACENT
WATERWAYS, prior to starting up the Hudson river if possible. You will need to
lower your mast at either Troy or Albany NY at the latest. Skipper Bob ninth
edition (2006) suggests Riverview Marina  518 943 5311 on the Catskill River
41 mi south of Troy or the  Castleton Boat Club 16.6 mi south of Troy  518 732
7077 (do it yourself, crane use fee $50.00 in 06). NOAA and Richardson charts
only go as far as Lyons, if you are going farther west than Lyons you will
need  THE CRUISING GUIDE TO THE NEW YOAK CANAL SYSTEM hopefully avaiable in
Waterford.

Jon on Valentine, presently at Middleport, mile 308 western Erie
Canal.

Is there any place to drop/raise a mast so as to get through?

Very good source for charts  & guide
books is ESS-Kay Yard in Brewerton NY

at North end of Lake Onieda

. (315)
676-2711 Call Kim in advance tell her

where you are going and take her advise

as to what you need and request that

she have it on hand for your estimated

arrival date. Best route for avoiding

as much upstream against current if

possible is Erie Canal to Oswego Canal.

Oswego to Kingston, side trip to the

Canadian 1000 Islands parks if

possible, then Ridau to Ottawa, Ottawa river

down stream to Sorell, Chambly

to Lake Champlaine. Best fuel price on Erie

canal is Winter Harbor, just

north of ESS-Kay.Jon On Valentine, presently

Middleport on western Erie

Canal ( Western Erie Canal is MUCH NICER than

Eastern but there is a 15 1/5

ft air draft limitation.)
