Incident on the Pongo River

Partners in Paradise left Baltimore on October 8th for our leisurely trip
down
the ICW to Florida and the Bahamas. We have had two minor mechanical issues
and
several weather issues. If it isn't nice, we don't go.

On Tuesday the 19th we were at the north end of the Pongo river where it is
quite narrow moving along at 8.5 mph. My wife was driving and talking to a
sailboat on the VHF when I heard her scream look out. A 50' Ocean sportfish
(Chieftain out of Dover, DE) was on our port side on a plane about 60' away.
No
radio traffic, just there they were. As soon as he got next to us he slowed
down which made his wake even worse. Within seconds a second 50' Ocean
sportfish
(Mad Hunt out of Virginia Beach, VA) did exactly the same thing. We did not
have time to turn into or out of their wakes and we rolled to the point
where my
84 father-in-law who fortunately was sitting down on the starboard side of
the
boat lost sight of the boats next to us. I estimate our roll at at least
20-25
degrees. Everything that was not tied down went to the starboard side of the

boat and lots of little trinkets and souvenirs were destroyed. A forty pound

tool box that was on non-skid and had a steel bar in front of it went
airborne
over the bar and landed on my wife's laptop computer. $1,200 down the drain
in
addition to the personal property destroyed.

I yelled at them in the most colorful terms I could think of and they never
answered or acknowledged. We received reports and photo's of the boats and
made
a report to the USCG and NC Natural Resources Police. Both agencies told us
there is no follow up possible because of jurisdiction issues with law
enforcement and the USCG evidently does not do anything other than catalog
these
incidents. That night one of my children went on line and I was ultimately
able
to speak to the owner of the second boat. I will not share their comments
with
the MTOA'ers. Fortunately no one was injured but our trip to Best Buy
yesterday
cost us the price of a new computer, car rental for a day, two days into a
marina and with weather issues closing in, we will stay until Saturday.

On a positive note, the folks at Belhaven Waterway Marina have been
spectacular.
When I spoke with them on the VHF they new who we were and what had
happened.
They had four or five people out there to help with the lines and told me
just
get it in our channel and we will get you in. The Enterprise Car Rental in
Washington, NC was very gracious and they came 30 miles to pick us up and
then
drop us off when we were finished.

Anyway, if you encounter a 50' Ocean by the name of Chieftain from Dover, DE

and/or a 50' Ocean Mad Hunt from Virginia Beach, VA tell then we said hello.

Our wakes will cross again sometime. If anyone finds them somewhere tied up
for the winter an e-mail would be appreciated. When I spoke with the
operator
of Mad Hunt he told me he heard all the colorful things I had to say and
admonished me for it. He did not ever answer or ask if we were ok. Both
boats
were operated by rather classless individuals.
Attitude is the difference
between an ordeal or an
ADVENTURE!!!!!

Joe,

Don't know if this approach has every been followed:  If you can get their
names, perhaps an email to the major marine insurance companies, stating that
you didn't know if they were insured with that company or not, but if they
were insured, you were informing them how reckless they operated their boats.

All, This did not occur to me but to a boat I was moored with on the Dismal
Swamp Canal.  They posted this on the mtoa site and I think all would
benefit from their experience.  I had a similar experience 2 years ago in
the Rock Pile in the icw Myrtle Beach.  Watch your stern for these jerks.
