With modern common rail diesels, there is almost no soot, and very small
amounts of carbon monoxide. On a percentage basis on board gas generators rank
right at the top for accidental deaths aboard. 3.5 kw diesel generator would
weigh about 160 lbs, separate tank would be no problem at all, and the whole
package really not much heavier than a gas alternative. However the only
reason for a generator is for air conditioning which would be mandatory in my
market on a boat this size. The Volvo drives are COMPOSITE hence no corrosion
problem. However if you have aluminum outdrives you can install a cathode
protection system. The newer drives will usually clear the water when tilted
up.  I agree that once loaded the gas outboards are going to struggle. As far
as diesel putting it out of reach, at $300K for a 34 ft. boat I don't think
the cost difference would really make that big of a difference to the
demographic.
