12/09/2007 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, KING EIDERS, PINE GROSBEAKS

From Fran and Tom Holloway:
12/09 - Madison, Hammonasset SP -10:00 at the "Warbler Tree" on
Willard's Island (the large white oak near the bench on the middle
trail), one WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL.  Earlier we saw (with many others)
numerous RED CROSSBILLS at West Beach near the pines.  Also there was
a flock of about 20 SNOW BUNTINGS near the pavilion just east of the
rotary, and 4 PURPLE SANDPIPERS on the rocks at the end of the jetty.

12/09 - Stamford -- 4 KING EIDERS seen on and off this  morning from
boat by Al Collins and Pat Dugan and from Stamford Ave by Mike  and
Wanda Moccio.

12/09 - East Hartland -- 20 PINE GROSBEAKS (careful count) seen from
10:03 A.M. t0 10:30 A.M. in all apple and crabapple trees on front
grounds of East Hartland Town Hall and Elementary School and across
Route 179 to larch and maple trees in front yard of house #27, apple
tree behind this house, and top of Eastern White Pine behind and right
of Post Office, also in deciduous trees and on wires along road in
front of Post Office.  Original count was of 9 birds, with additions
coming in from wooded areas distantly behind and also to the immediate
right of the elementary school.  Maximum 13 birds at one time in right
hand crabapple in front of Town Hall, with 7 other Pine Grosbeaks in
trees in front of elementary school.  Slightly more adult males than
females.  Associated birds were American Robins, Cedar Waxwings, and
European Starlings.

Hageman Shean turns 90 degrees) -- 20 Common Redpolls;
Litchfield, North Shore Road,  North Cove on Bantam Lake -- 1 Northern
Pintail female.

ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK.

12/09 - Goshen, East Street North -- 17 COMMON REDPOLLS, eating birch
catkins on the east side of the road near Hageman Shean Road.  A
couple of adult males in the group.
Watertown, Route 63 -- several BLACK VULTURES, flying low over
business district near Dunkin Donuts and Pizza Hut.
