Subject: [PUP] Dripless Shaft Logs

I have had dripless shaft logs on our current boat with any problems for over
5,000 of operation. We have ordered a new Nordhavn and would like to hear what
you have to say about installing them on a offshore vessel. I have been looking
at the PSS.
John Henrichs

  1. Some Nordhavns have a wet bilge, putting in a
dripless shaft seal, does not give you a dry bilge.
Anchor locker drains, air conditioning condensate, etc.

  2. If you are cruising outside the US you will find it hard
    to get replacement parts.

Stuffing can be bought almost everywhere, or even made
using rope and grease if you need some where you can
not get it.

  1. Drip shaft seals normally do not failure catastrophically,
    but dripless shaft seals can.

  2. It is easy to adjust drip rates or even replace all the
stuffing in the middle of an ocean, that is not true for
    dripless.

Our family has have had several boats with PSS dripless
and, one with a stuffing box.

Rememeber if world cruising everything will fail somewhere
and you will have to fix it, no one else can do it.

If you are doing World Cruising get a stuffing box!
(No question about it...)
