Hi everyone,
I am translating CollectionSpace UI into Portuguese and I don't understand
one thing.
According to the wiki page, Configuring CollectionSpace section, after
making changes to the UI we'll only need to run "mvn install" (see, i.e.,
"How to brand your system").
However, for me this step does not reflect any changes on the
webapps/cspace-ui/tenants/my_tenant/bundle. To see any change I have to do
a new installation of CollectionSpace.
Is this the normal procedure or am I doing something wrong?
Thank you,
Francisco

Francisco,
There should be no need to do a new installation for the UI changes you're making. In addition to doing a "mvn install" or "mvn clean install", you might want to remove the "cspace-ui" directory/folder from your ${tomcat}/webapps directory. Depending on how you have Tomcat configured, it will not expand the cspace-ui.war file (with you new changes), if the older exapanded "cspace-ui" directory exists.
I hope that helps. Let me know.

Hi Francisco,
As well, after making changes in the UI, it's sometimes necessary to
clear caches in your browser (or use a different browser) to view them:

BTW, there's a very brief doc on creating translations here, illustrating
how one might make these in the 'core' tenant:
https://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/UNRELEASED/Translating+the+CollectionSpace+User+Interface
In the example on the above page, those changes are made to the main - not
per-tenant overlay - properties file, but it's conceivable that you could
make them in the latter, as well (see more below).
To date, there have been - at least - publicly contributed (Spanish) and
public and awaiting contribution (Danish) translations performed, per the
following email threads:
http://lists.collectionspace.org/pipermail/talk_lists.collectionspace.org/2013-December/001649.html
and
http://lists.collectionspace.org/pipermail/talk_lists.collectionspace.org/2014-December/001891.html
Here's a direct link to the Spanish translation by Javier Ormeño:
https://github.com/javiero/ui/blob/2ce6464d416ae42107378546257f67c7aeedf2a5/src/main/webapp/defaults/bundle/core-messages.properties
And to the Danish translation by Chris Pott, per his message above:
https://bitbucket.org/christopher_pott/corpus_ui/src/master/src/main/webapp/tenants/smk/bundle/core-messages.properties-overlay?at=master&fileviewer=file-view-default
I see that Chris made his Danish translations in a per-tenant overlay
properties file. It'd be interesting to experiment with whether a
CollectionSpace implementer could simply deploy this file to the relevant
server location, restart CollectionSpace, clear browser caches (if needed),
and immediately experience translation of text labels?
Finally, this is to thank you, Francisco, for embarking on this
translation, and to encourage you to contribute it to the project. We'd be
very grateful to you.
Aron
P.S. In the 'Translating' page on the wiki, it's suggested that a
translator might want to make these changes by using the built-in text
editor in the GitHub web interface. Of course, these changes could instead
be made using a desktop text editor and committed/pushed to a repo, or even
just sent around in email, posted to a website, etc. The goal of that page
is to offer one fairly easy approach for a non-technical person who might
have in interest in contributing a translation.

Thank you Richard and Aron for your answers.
It seems that, as sugested by Richard, removing the cspace-ui directory
from ${tomcat}/webapps solved the problem.
I intend to submit the translation as is suggested by the team. Aron. Right
now, however, as I am trying to understand the structure of the program, I
am doing all this in my computer first. Besides, there are so manny strings
to translate that I have to figure very well their meaning before submit a
file.

Thank you, Francisco. I'm very glad that Richard's suggestion - to remove
the existing cspace-ui directory - resolved this issue.
We appreciate your considering sharing your Portuguese translation with the
CollectionSpace community. That is terrific!

Thank you Richard and Aron for your answers.
It seems that, as sugested by Richard, removing the cspace-ui directory
from ${tomcat}/webapps solved the problem.
I intend to submit the translation as is suggested by the team. Aron.
Right now, however, as I am trying to understand the structure of the
program, I am doing all this in my computer first. Besides, there are so
manny strings to translate that I have to figure very well their meaning
before submit a file.

BTW, there's a very brief doc on creating translations here,
illustrating how one might make these in the 'core' tenant:

In the example on the above page, those changes are made to the main -
not per-tenant overlay - properties file, but it's conceivable that you
could make them in the latter, as well (see more below).
To date, there have been - at least - publicly contributed (Spanish) and
public and awaiting contribution (Danish) translations performed, per the
following email threads:
http://lists.collectionspace.org/pipermail/talk_lists.collectionspace.org/2013-December/001649.html
and
http://lists.collectionspace.org/pipermail/talk_lists.collectionspace.org/2014-December/001891.html
Here's a direct link to the Spanish translation by Javier Ormeño:
https://github.com/javiero/ui/blob/2ce6464d416ae42107378546257f67c7aeedf2a5/src/main/webapp/defaults/bundle/core-messages.properties
And to the Danish translation by Chris Pott, per his message above:
https://bitbucket.org/christopher_pott/corpus_ui/src/master/src/main/webapp/tenants/smk/bundle/core-messages.properties-overlay?at=master&fileviewer=file-view-default
I see that Chris made his Danish translations in a per-tenant overlay
properties file. It'd be interesting to experiment with whether a
CollectionSpace implementer could simply deploy this file to the relevant
server location, restart CollectionSpace, clear browser caches (if needed),
and immediately experience translation of text labels?
Finally, this is to thank you, Francisco, for embarking on this
translation, and to encourage you to contribute it to the project. We'd be
very grateful to you.
Aron
P.S. In the 'Translating' page on the wiki, it's suggested that a
translator might want to make these changes by using the built-in text
editor in the GitHub web interface. Of course, these changes could instead
be made using a desktop text editor and committed/pushed to a repo, or even
just sent around in email, posted to a website, etc. The goal of that page
is to offer one fairly easy approach for a non-technical person who might
have in interest in contributing a translation.

Francisco,
There should be no need to do a new installation for the UI changes
you're making. In addition to doing a "mvn install" or "mvn clean
install", you might want to remove the "cspace-ui" directory/folder from
your ${tomcat}/webapps directory. Depending on how you have Tomcat
configured, it will not expand the cspace-ui.war file (with you new
changes), if the older exapanded "cspace-ui" directory exists.
I hope that helps. Let me know.

Subject: [Talk] Translating the UI
Hi everyone,
I am translating CollectionSpace UI into Portuguese and I don't
understand one thing.
Thank you,
Francisco
