My 2 cents - ask for change if you  want.
I am, by anyone's estimation, an inexperienced birder.  In  the short time I
have been actively birding I have been lucky enough to see  quite a few
"interesting" birds, a few I've found myself, most I have been  alerted to by the
members of this list, both personally and through the daily  listings.  I would
never have seen or even known about some of the  great birds in this state
over the past year if it were not for  the exceptional Connecticut birding
community.  We are privileged to  have a great many active birders with a fantastic
level of expertise and  experience  who routinely share their sightings and
their knowledge with  anyone who cares to look at this list or ask.
Like most new birders, I have managed to make more than my  share of
mis-identifications and mis-statements (I no longer say "Canadian  Geese").  I am
more than happy when someone points out my error,  explains why it is probably
not so, and points me in the right direction.  (I can't imagine preferring to
believe an incorrect  identification, rather than being told or guided to the
truth). Not once has anyone been in any way rude or demeaning over my
ignorance, and instead I have consistently received encouragement and  help.
I have to believe that as long as you accept advice and  information in the
spirit it is given here you will not be treated any  differently.  If
occasionally something posted here could be  taken two ways, my experience dictates
that it should be construed as an attempt  to be constructive and helpful.
Finally, I'd like to add that birding lists are not always like  this in
other states.  I have seen snide remarks and routine attempts at  one-upsmanship
on other lists by people with no where near the level of  knowledge and
ability that is displayed here.  Personally, I'm grateful to  have the help and
support we have available.
