It gives me great pleasure to contact you regarding the upcoming activities at the Earl Babbie Research Center. Many of us who have had the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Babbie have been eagerly awaiting the launch of this landmark center. For almost forty years, Earl Babbie has helped many of us guide students through learning the intricacies of social science research methodology.

I am personally inviting you to the dedication of the Earle Babbie Research Center on March 21, 2012 at 12 o’clock (noon) at Smith Hall on the Chapman University Campus.  The day’s festivities also include a special conference:  The Future of Social Science Methods. I urge you to consider responding to the call for papers or simply attend the conference. You can RSVP to the dedication and register for the conference at:  http://www.chapman.edu/wilkinson/BabbieCenter/conference.asphttp://www.alumni.chapman.edu/redirect.aspx?linkID=109590&eid=272001. Accepted papers presented at the conference will be included in a joint publication that I will produce with Dr. Babbie. The conference is free and I encourage you to attend.

A highlight of the programming on March 21st will feature a workshop on best practices in teaching research methods, led personally by Dr. Earl Babbie. This unique opportunity is an example of the types of activity academic professionals can only experience at the Earl Babbie Research Center. You won’t want to miss this very special chance to learn new ideas and obtain key tips and tricks you will employ in your own methods classroom from the foremost international expert in the field of social science research!

I hope that you will consider being a part of this very special day. Chapman University and Wilkinson College are proud to have been a part of Earl Babbie’s very prestigious career.  Chapman students will benefit as well as the social science community from the establishment of the Earl Babbie Research Center. To round out the day’s festivities we have a very special surprise planned for Dr. Babbie. With your help, we would like to raise $25,000 to support Babbie Center programming which includes student fellowships for travel to conferences, student/faculty research partnerships and other general needs for the center.  Should we reach our goal of $25,000, this will allow us to name the alcove in the Center in honor of Dr. Babbie’s wife Suze. We know that this is something that would bring great joy to Dr. Babbie – however please note that this is intended to be a surprise and we would like to commemorate this day with this very unique honor.

This year marks the 38th anniversary of the publication of Dr. Babbie’s legendary book, The Practice of Social Research. Please consider making a gift of $38, $380, $3,800 or a gift size of your choosing to honor Dr. Babbie’s many years of service to the field of social science research.  You can make your gift directly at https://secure.touchnet.com/C20539_ustores/web/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCTID=47http://www.alumni.chapman.edu/redirect.aspx?linkID=109589&eid=272001.  Donations will allow the center to pursue its mission and support cutting edge interdisciplinary research while encouraging faculty-student collaboration.  Donors will be acknowledged at the dedication ceremony.

I look forward to seeing you on March 21st and hope that you will assist us in honoring Earl’s legacy through a gift to support the efforts of the Earl Babbie Research Center programming. To date, we have already received commitments totaling $8,000 however your help will be critical in the achievement of our $25,000 goal. If you have questions regarding the conference, call for papers or the center please do not hesitate to contact babbiecenter@chapman.edumailto:babbiecenter@chapman.edu or if you have any questions regarding a gift to the center please contact Lisa Nashua, director of development, at Nashua@chapman.edumailto:Nashua@chapman.edu.

Sincerely,

Ann Gordon, Ph.D.
