Stratford, American Golden Plover

There was a single American Golden Plover at Stratford's Long Beach this
morning, seen briefly flying over the dune and marsh with 2 Black-bellied
Plovers. Shorebird numbers were low overall.

The most interesting thing to me was a large mass (I estimated at 1500 to
2000) of tree swallows which came in very high overhead from the Southwest. They
flew to the Northeast, gradually descending until they reached the top of
the  Spartina alterniflora  growing in the marsh. They flew en masse just over
the Spartina for an hour or so, grabbing insects. Then they  flew back to  the
Southwest, gaining distance and altitude until they disappeared. This took
place between about 10:30 am and noon.

Warblers in the dune thickets were few. I saw about 15 or 20 Common
Yellowthroats, 2 Yellow warblers and 2 Palm warblers. The latter were both of  the
Western race. There were also a few Savannah  sparrows.
