Nordhaven vs Selene

As a Selene owner who has done extensive passage making I think both the Nordhavn the Selene are great boats and tops in their fields. Last year I took my 53 Selene, Watermark, the entire West Coast, Dana Point California to Bellingham Washington without any problems. The boat performed flawlessly. My son and I did the longest no stop passage in three days, San Franscio to Newport Oregon. At night we took 3 hour shifts, one of us in a great pilot birth and the other sitting comfortable in the Stidd chair, auto pilot on head phones on listening to great music and it was one of the best passages I have ever made.

If you analysis it, weather avoidance is the key. In 1992 I sailed my 52 Morgan out island ketch from St Thomas,  Bermuda, Fail in the Azores and finally to Porta Santos Spain. Then we sailed back in the Columbus 500 rally sponsored by Jimmy Cornell. In our en initil passage we got hit by an 8 hour storm that hammered us with 60 knot winds and 30 ft waves, No fun. Quite frankly I wouldn't want to be in those conditions in a Nordhavn or Selene. Where we used our sails and hove to it appears to me that the primary defense would be engine reliance or a sea anchor. Because of there heavy keels a sailboat can recover from a roll over. The Nordhavn or the Selene would not. The Nordhavn 40 that did the around the world passage did a great job of weather avoidance. Storm windows, stabilizers and a full displacement hull, good engine maintenance and weather avoidance is the key.

My Selene has an exquisite cherry wood interior and because of constant maintenance the outside stainless and fiberglass looks great. Other older Selene's I have been on all look great also. I believe this is because the owners love and appreciate them and do the proper maintenance. Because the brand has not been out there as long as the Nordhavn there is not as many, but they are sure catching up.

Nordhavn has done a great job of marketing the passage making ability and they are to be commended. In a couple of years I will be taking my boat back down the West Coast, through the canal, the Caribbean and to Ft Lauderdale Florida. My primary concern will be good weather windows, not the boat.

Mine will not be the first Selene to do this trip. In 2005 Burnham & Peggy Beard along with the Dobbs took Selen hull number 5311 on a passage from Alaska to Maine. There boat was Morning Mist. Again the boat made it flawlessly and without mishap. I believe you will hear more about these great boats as time goes on. One thing you might note there are very few of them on the resale market. That should tell you something.
