Great post (as usual) Gary,

I agree with almost everything you  said.  Even up here in chilly New
England, we love our flybridge.  Unless it is really cold, or pouring  rain,
that's where we prefer to be.  But  then again, I'm a former sailor - and
open-cockpit ultralight flyer.

With the RayMarine  electronics package, you can put your master
autopilot unit (with rudder angle  indicator) at whichever location you
choose - and then use the wireless  remote at the other.  On our boat
the master is inside, so at the upper  helm, we have added rudder
position readout on the Raymarine E-80  screen (easily done just by
programing the unit).  It works great.  It's good to  have that feedback
underway as it alerts us to weird stuff,  like seaweed caught on the rudder,
or when it's time to re-align the rudders -  a PDQ peculiarity.  It's also
good
to be able to center the rudders during  close-in maneuvering when  we
use the throttles almost exclusively.  (This maneuverability -  without even
having to touch the wheel - is  certainly one of the joys of the powercat!)

I would  go for one of the zoomy new wireless
handheld autopilot controls, except  they lack a rudder angle
indication.  Too bad, maybe the next round  or two of development will
help me out  there....
