Shipping container commercial buildings

My client city has been approached with a proposal to develop a commercial ‘Food Truck’ complex along our main business thoroughfare built from shipping containers.  Presently, shipping containers are only allowed, if at all, in their original state as residential storage at the rear of a lot/tract.  My client city has adopted the International Building Code (IBC) and all revisions thereof.

  1. What should I know about the world of repurposed shipping containers?
  2. What regulation is available to govern/manage commercial use of repurposed shipping containers?
  3. What Oklahoma cities are allowing commercial development via repurposed shipping containers?
  4. What Code of Ordinance changes might be necessary?

Respectfully,

Steven,

I do not know if the IBC addresses refurbishing shipping containers into commercial space, but I believe that OKC has some businesses that used shipping containers for the construction.  I recall being in a restaurant near Second and Oklahoma Avenue that was constructed of shipping containers.  You might contact the OKC attorney responsible for building permits.
