Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsI assume that loopers (veterans and dreamers too) know about Active Captain as a cruising resource.
I pass this on in case you don't...and endorse it thoroughly.

Making The Great Loop Greater >>>
Around this time every May, groups of cruising boaters with dreams of
starting America's Great Loop start heading up toward New York's
Hudson River. America's Great Loop is the continuous waterway that
includes the eastern portion of North America including the Atlantic
and Gulf intracoastal waterways, the Great Lakes, the Canadian heritage
canals, and the inland rivers of America's heartland. At cruising
speeds it takes about a year to complete although many couples take
multiple years and explore many side trips. It's definitely not a race.
Great Loopers were the original core ActiveCaptain users. We noticed
early on when we were hailed on the VHF or sought out at a boater's
potluck that it was the Great Loopers who needed to find us and tell
us why ActiveCaptain was so important to them. The reason was always
the same and hasn't changed as we hear the exact same quote today:
"ActiveCaptain saved us money."
Thanks to the many thousands of boaters who have gone along the loop
in part or in total, ActiveCaptain documents every marina, every free
dock, every place to get fuel, every bridge encountered, and of course,
all of the many locks. ActiveCaptain data is the best source of unbiased
information through the comments, reviews, and details that are provided
by those that have gone before. The information is current and the
hazards have been verified.
And best of all, access to all of this knowledge through the website is
completely free. In addition, you can access all of the ActiveCaptain
data when you don't have an Internet connection through one of our many
third party navigation programs including Coastal Explorer and MaxSea
Time Zero. For a current list of apps go to our website:

So as Loopers head north, make sure you're adding to the community
that came before you. Your reviews become a self-documenting blog of
sorts detailing your travel from town to town. The information you
discover and the changes you find will help the next group coming
behind you much like you're being helped now. It's good karma too.
Fuel >>>
Even when fuel prices aren't soaring - and we have seen a slight
downturn in the past couple of weeks - finding good fuels prices is
important to the cruising community. It's a big part of our cruising
budget.
Since ActiveCaptain's inception we have worked steadily to improve
access to current fuel pricing and to enhance its presentation. Our
goal is to provide you with the tools you need to make the best
decisions about when and where to fill your tanks.
We use technology where it makes sense but we also work to develop
relationships and work with marinas to help them understand the
importance of current fuel prices to increase their business. We are
especially pleased when we find new ways boaters can keep fuel costs
down.
LukFuel in southern Florida recently contacted us about their new
venture. They are using a series of fuel trucks to bring marine fuel
to boaters at a number of marinas and yacht clubs. Not only is this
more convenient, they have great prices and they are offering
additional discounts to ActiveCaptain users. You can find the locations
by searching on LukFuels in ActiveCaptain.
As an example of the price LukFuels has been offering, last week the
price was $3.75 for ActiveCaptain users in Ft Lauderdale. The price
included all taxes. Future prices will be different - this is just an
example. Contact LukFuel for the current price.
Keep watching the newsletter for other new features that will help you
keep your fuel costs low.
Defender 1st >>>
We have had some great Defender 1st offers that have helped you with a
wide variety of tasks on your boat. You have told us that you love
saving money and can't wait to see the next deal. But time on your boat
shouldn't be all work and no play. This week's Defender 1st offer will
help you relax in comfort and style after a day on the water or even
one in the engine room.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the sunset in the comfort of a Designer
Padded Deck Chair. They're lightweight, sturdy, corrosive resistant,
comfortable, and great looking. And when you're ready to leave for your
next port they are easy to stow.
Check out the link for all the features.
Designer Padded Deck Chair: $63.74 (Regularly: $74.99)
Special ends: May 15, 2012

You won't find this chair at a better price. Now is the time to pick
one up and don't forget your crew. They like to relax at the end of the
day too.
Remember - Defender 1st: one product, one week, one incredible price.
When you're thinking about purchasing boating supplies, think of
Defender first.
The crew is stuck waiting for the repairs to finish on the Norfolk
Railroad Bridge so it can lift and we can pass through. Well, it's hard
to really feel "stuck" when we are staying at ActiveCaptain's highest
rated marina, Dowry Creek Marina. We've been having a great time and
have met more new boating friends than we can count. Mary is the perfect
host with something happening every night. But boating isn't always
about parties and potlucks. aCappella's crew recently survived a
harrowing night at anchor. To see how Dyna and Dylan faired check out
