It would seem that the fanatics have done it again.

I have heard that you can't pee in a toilet on a boat, but you can pee over
the side! I have heard you can't use a porta potty or a natures head type
of toilet. They don't allow Type 1 USCG Approved devices.

For my vintage boat they have installed a holding tank (there is an
overboard discharge but it is disconnected), but I've also heard that pump
out stations are few and far between.

I have needs and those needs have to be met at least once a day on a fairly
regular schedule, so what am I going to do?

My first thought is to get a bucket, 5 gal, and affix a seat arrangement
(that can be removed quickly).

Then when the time comes I put it in the dinghy and motor to a remote spot
(I'll have my Kindle with me of course). Do my business, rinse out the
bucket and head back. Just hope that Champ is a deep water animal and that
there are no Mounties hiding in the bushes!!

I'd be interested as to what other solutions others took as we are going to
Lake Champlain and then Ottawa the summer of '16. '17 we will continue out
the Erie Canal (any knowledge of the requirements there?) exiting at Oswego
with a side trip up the 1000 Islands (any requirements there?) then back
into Canada at Kingston using the Trent-Severn to Georgian Bay.

Is there a central location of knowledge as to where and how you can deal
with a dump on the Loop?

Thanks.

Best regards,

Charles

It's very simple. Get a dog, train it to run the dinghy and have it take you to shore twice a day. :)

The holding tank regulations on Lake Champlain and in Canada have been in
effect for many years, nothing new there.

Your holding tank must not be connected to an overboard discharge.  Not
difficult to disconnect and cap the hose from the tank.  You may as well
leave disconnected permanently unless you go offshore often enough.  I
can't think of anyplace on the inland waterways were overboard discharge is
permitted.

One suggestion, hope no one would consider impolite, start using a "pee"
bottle.

First you are going to be hard pressed to find any Mounties hiding in the bushes on Lake Champlain unless they've got lost below the 45th parallel ( yes I know it's the 49th further west ) Canada ! eh.

Disconnect your Holding tank overboard discharge, there are pumps out stations in your cruising areas.  On Lake Champlain Rouses Pt. NY.  and certainly on the Erie canal and Lake Ontario plus 1K Islands

Enjoy the Thousand Islands, that where we are now for the summer.

Is the statement about Natures Head (composting toilet) accurate?

Don't worry, Ray, some people seem to believe that outside their own place,
it's the third world with no culture, no universities, no decent restaurants
or hotels, and I could go on.

Of course, in the boating world, they "heard" (from whom, go figure...) that
there were no services, no pump out in the marinas, not even marinas on
hundred of miles around, no quality of life, no quality of people, of space,
of scenery... They think in terms of cops, jail, punishment, banishment...

It's part of the challenge of the technology world. Anybody can throw any
kind of information on the web without checking the sources, and hundred of
people will take it for granted : "It has to be true, I've read it on the
internet !"

Let's do our best to welcome those people when they knock at our door and
help them to climb a step. One by one.

By the way, I've heard that in Florida, average boaters were 93 years old
and were so blind that they had to drive their boats by relying only on
computers and monitors inside of their air conditionned trawlers. They'll
sue you if they hit you because you had no AIS aboard.

I've also heard that Cuban pirates were molesting anybody going out more
than 3 miles of any US marina. And in Texas, they send a torpedo to knock
you down if you venture too close to an oil platform. Oh well...

Your information on Florida Boaters is incorrect. The average age of boaters is way above 93...........I swear!
