CALL TO ARTISTS
Tacoma Artist-Made Work for International
Hospitality Presentations
It is common practice to exchange meaningful representations of local
culture between representatives of Sister Cities. Tacoma would like to
express its graciousness to International Dignitaries through the
presentation of locally created artwork.
The City of Tacoma has ten Sister Cities, all of which are either port
cities or have other aspects similar or complimentary to Tacoma's
economic character. Tacoma's Sister City activities are as diverse as
its membership. Some examples of activities include performing arts
festivals, arts exchanges, baseball exchanges and the International Film
and Food Festival.
THE PROJECT
The City of Tacoma is developing a juried catalog of Tacoma artist-made
objects that may be purchased and presented to International
Dignitaries. Artwork in the catalog must be available for purchase as
the need arises. Submitted work should fall into the following three
pricing categories:
$5 - $25 Level
For example: bookmarks, sets of cards and small paperweights
$26 - $50 Level
For example: ceramics, glass vases and handmade books
$100 - $250 Level
These could be one-of-a-kind "to order" pieces
SISTER CITIES
Background
The first Sister City Program, Sister Cities International, was created
in 1956 at the request of President Eisenhower, giving national focus to
affiliations between cities in the United States and in other countries.
The goal of the program is to promote deeper cultural understanding,
international visitation and hospitality that lead to long lasting
relationships. More recently, Sister City links have become an
increasingly important conduit for economic development.
Tacoma's Sister Cities are: Aalesund, Norway; Cienfuegos, Cuba; Davao
City, Philippines; Fuzhou, China; George, South Africa; Gunsan, Korea;
Kiryat-Motzkin, Israel; Kitakyushu, Japan; Taichung, Taiwan; and
Vladivostok, Russia
Mission
The mission of the Tacoma Sister Cities program is to promote cultural
and political diversity. Sister Cities encourage exchange between
business, governments, health, arts, cultural and educational groups and
organizations.
