Experience competitive, real-time art making during the third annual Iron Artist Competition at Tacoma Art Museum's Metal-Urge Free Community Festivalhttp://www.tacomaartmuseum.org/webpage.asp?action=build&view=8105 on Friday, July 31. This multi-faceted event is in partnership with The City of Tacoma and will take place at Tacoma Art Museum and across the street at Tollefson Plaza.
The deadline to sign up to be an Iron Artist Challenger is June 30, 2009. Entry is free. Individuals or teams (4 people maximum) are welcome. Join us on the museum plaza as we bring the art out of the museum and into the streets! This free metal-inspired festival will feature robot demonstrations from SOTAbots, dancing, music, a performance by Rainier Ringers English Handbell Choir, and art-making activities. Come and be seen in your own wearable art ensemble and strut your stuff on the runway during the Iron Artist Fashion Show.

Participating artists will be asked to create a wearable art masterpiece using surprise materials in a one-hour high pressure art-extravaganza. Inspired by the original Japanese cooking show Iron Chef, Iron Artist invites artists to create competitive, improvised art with materials provided by Tacoma Art Museum and selected based on the current exhibitions Ornament as Art: Avant-Garde Jewelry from the Helen Williams Drutt Collectionhttp://www.tacomaartmuseum.org/Ornament, June 6-September 13, and Loud Bones: The Jewelry of Nancy Wordenhttp://www.tacomaartmuseum.org/LoudBones, June 27-September 20.
