Scott,
I have to take a reallydeep breath on this one. :-)  Part is not knowing exactly what your lung capacity and lung function (including blood gasses are).  There are a lot physiiological considerations. It could be OK--but I would suggest that you check with a pulmonologist (medical lung specialist).  Even better if you can find one who is a sports diver.

I also had a hooku outfit aboard.  It used a one hp Sears oil less compressor (teflon rings) and about 80 feet of hose.  I would not go any deeper with this rig than 8 feet, but the 80 feet allowed me to go anywhere on the boat with ease.  I used this only for working on the boat.  I would not use it for any anchor retrieval etc.

As most of us know, you can get into trouble even in 8 feet of water--but if you know the rules, this is verly unlikely.  I have used this type of unit for years to clean the bottoms of boats.  Many commercial bottom cleaning  divers used to use this same setup in S. Calif.

The hardest part of the conversion was the fitting from the normal SCUBA regulator was that the threads on the the SCUBA hoses did not match with any regular air compressor hose I had.  An adaptor was made.  I serviced my own regulators (no longer dive after heart attackes, bypass and a few angioplasties).  I set the regulator slightly "lighter" than normal, so it required less negitive pressure to open the valve.  I made hundreds of dives with this rig.

Regards,

Bob Austin
