AMERICORPS Position
Sustainability Outreach Coordinator
September 1, 2013 - July 15, 2014
Service Description
The member will serve to conduct intensive outreach to educate and change bahaviors in an east Tacoma neighborhood. The members, with assistance from the Healthy Homes, Healthy Neighborhood Management Team, will develop appropriate educational materials. They will conduct personal outreach through a variety of strategies, including door-to-door conversations. The members will keep detailed accounts of each interaction and follow up with the appropriate service or program provider. Additionally, the members will engage with existing community groups, including churches, and schools.The members will develop a kick-off Sustainability Fair to be held in autumn 2014.
The member will engage citizens in a range of sustainability topics, including recycling, air quality, energy conservation, stormwater prevention, and urban forestry. Through training from the Management Team staff, the members will be able to promote and make connections to the existing, but sometimes fragmented programs offered by the various organizations.
The Healthy Homes, Healthy Neighborhood Team is staffed by employees from: City of Tacoma Office of Sustainability, Environmental Services Division, Health Department, Metro Parks, Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, Pierce County Conservation District, Tacoma Power and Tacoma Water.
Duties
Under guidance of the Healthy Homes, Healthy Neighborhood Team and in conjunction with part-time intern:
Collaborate with agencies to develop appropriate outreach materials.
Conduct door-to-door outreach to approximately 2000 households.
Track encounters, follow up with appropriate agencies and circle back with residents.
Develop other outreach events, including speaking at neighborhood groups and forums and facilitating workshops.
Develop Sustainability Fair and Neighborhood Sustainability Workshops.
Collaborate with partnering agencies to develop neigbhorhood action days to include neighborhoon cleanup, tree planting, and rain garden installation.
Collaborate with local schools, and other community organizations to educate their students and members and recruit volunteers.
Reach out to other organizations in the City that provide community services. Be knowledgable about their programs (to refer individuals) and look for opportunities to partner on projects or programs.
Track progress and develop reports
Qualifications
Comfortable talking with strangers and groups. Good with understanding and communicating a variety of sustainability topics. Excellent organization, including event and meeting planning and facilitation, tracking data, report writing required. Strong attention to detail and excellent word, excel, access and powerpoint skills. Marketing and sales skills desirable. Ability to work independently and on teams, prioritize and see projects through to completion. Knowledge of sustainability issues required.
40 hours/week and will include some regular evening and weekend time. Office at City of Tacoma Municipal Building.
