Yesterday I hosted a group of 35 lady bicyclists riding cross country to
raise money and increase awareness of Breast Cancer research.  Their web
master was traveling with them in a motor home.  He had a briefcase
unit:"MSAT".  I believe that he said it was a "skytel" system.  He was using
the satellite for up and down load at 9600baud inside the motorhome--in this
case shooting through the front window, but he said at times it went thru the
Al. roof!  The compas heading was critical to about 5 degrees and the
elevation was set for the specific Lat and Long.  Apparently there are 5
Satelites which cover Canada, the entire USA and Caribbean down to Trinadad.
He is a professional web master and was continuing his work on this
trip--about 40% of the time via the satelite link.  This system also uses
telephony as well as data.  I do not know the cost of the unit (he estimated
about $4,000 or the Kilobite cost of usage(all of this was donnated by the
company for the charity).  Have any of the list members had experience with
this type of unit?  I do not remember this specific unit being mentioned.
What impressed me was the ability to work the web, all be it slowly.
