Yesterday’s CEF update. Great summary from Sheryl on where we are with the budget and CTE.

The CTE hangup in the Senate does not mean the effort to work with Senator Reed’s office on the adult ed ammendments was all for naught. It will be back on the table when the HELP committee returns to this… when that will be, I don’t know.

Dear CEF Members:

I. Updates from the Hill

·      After working through the weekend with the ultimate goal of reaching an agreement on a CR by 5:30 pm today, negotiators in the Senate have postponed the procedural vote to begin consideration of the CR until Tuesday at 2:15 pm. Politico reports that a deal has been reached on funding to combat the Zika virus, which signals progress in the negotiations. Funding for Flint and Louisiana disaster relief, along with transitioning oversight of internet domain names away from the United States, remain outstanding issues. We will continue to update members as we learn more.

·      After the CTE reauthorization easily passed the House last week and the Senate HELP Committee announced plans to mark up a similar CTE bill this week, it appeared that CTE reauthorization had gained some momentum. It was announced today, however, that the mark-up has been postponed until further notice. CQ reports that a draft of the Senate bill scheduled for mark-up contained a number of provisions not present in the House bill, all of which limited Education Department oversight of the CTE programs. Senate Democrats, including HELP Ranking Member Murray, opposed the draft Senate legislation, and the National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education sent a letter to Senators on Friday urging opposition of any provisions in the bill that restricts the authority of the Secretary for CTE programs.

II. Happening This Week
