I choose the Follow-Me system for our 49' DeFever RPH as I too could not
justify the expense of the KVH or other systems.
There is a bit of a learning curve in setting up and adjusting the tracking
system, but all-in-all I am relatively pleased with the unit. It is NOT an
underway system....although I imagine that it could be used at our slow
speeds in sheltered water, but I haven't tried. It does track quite well
at anchorage, even when swinging quite a bit.
The unit is not shielded, so it needs to be mounted away from any SSB
antenna matching unit, and perhaps the SSB antenna itself. When first
mounting mine, it apparently was too close to the matching unit and blew
part of the tracking circuit. They exchanged out the unit for me at no
cost and advised me about the mounting location.
Since Direct or Dish TV is sensitive (as any satellite signal) to
elevation, the unit would need manual adjusting (leveling) due to any new
listing induced....such as fuel or water usage from one side or the
other. I mounted mine on the upper boat deck railing, near the stern. I
used a wooden wedge between the unit (a large diameter PVC pipe housing the
tracking motor) and the rail (hose clamped on) and am able to adjust
(level) the unit if I have induced a fuel usage list. It took a couple of
tries (temporary mounting locations) to finally choose this one, since I
had to find a location that had a clear view on 360 degrees. If it is
mounted where a satellite signal obstruction is too close to it, i.e., a
signal mast, davit, etc., then it can't "see" through it. Mounting it
farther away from the obstruction usually will solve that issue.
So, bottom line, yes, I would recommend it if you want it for anchorage
only and are willing to do some manual adjustments (once you have changed
anchorages by 100 miles or so or induced a list not previously set up for.)
