Ships Log

Dear All:

Has anyone on the list developed a ships log using Excel or some other
application that they are willing to share?  I have been working on one, but
not wanting to re-invent the wheel, thought I would ask.

I have searched the internet and found a number of printed versions and some
that can be purchased on CD, but nothing that can be downloaded.

We are about to leave Hong Kong (on our new trawler) on a voyage that will
take us to the US via the Indian Ocean, Med and Atlantic.  I have a log book
that I used on my sailboat, but it is not applicable to a motor vessel.

Gordon - Not sure if this is exactly what you are
looking for, but here's a passage report (Dana Point
CA to Ft Lauderdale) that has a log for the journey.
It's in PDF, but the original data was in Excel -
wouldn't take much to adapt. I had multiple tabs for
each piece of machinery.

I have a Lotus 123 spreadsheet that I can easily convert to Excel.  If you
wish a copy send a note to me at JohnPH@Comcast.net

The response may not be very quick since we are currently boating along the
Atlantic coast of France.

Peter,

Here is the ships log spreadsheet that I have kept this year.  Please use it
as you
will. NOTE that some columns are calculated and others are to be filled in
each hour, or logging period.

Note that columns BL thru BX in the 2005 version calculate the straight line
distance traveled from the LAT / LON data entered. I don't know how well
these formulas will convert from Lotus 123 (as written) to Excel so they
need some touchup.  There have been minor changes through time and from year
to year so pick the ones you like and throw away the rest. There is also a
departure check list on a separate page.

I always copy the previous line down one line and fill in the new data so
that all the formulas carry forward.  I hope you find it of some use and
would appreciate any ideas for additions or improvements.

Regards,  John Harris
