Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsDear Friends,
Recently I wound up on the list of one of the worst spammers on the
planet, and have been receiving typically 200+ spam emails a day, 7 days a
week. As you might imagine, this is making me even nuttier than usual.
I tried hand-crafting a word list used to block them all, but it required
daily updating and adding as the spammer added more and more new customers
to spam for. That list had hundreds of words on it and still wasn't
blocking but half of them.
Bizarrely, these are ads from all the major usa companies, and many of
those companies said this was not something they'd authorized. For
example, Dell Computers has installed an automated process on their website
to instantly move any pages their spams linked to.
Few days ago, I think I found the correct combination of tools available
on my email server and it appears to be working ... but I was concerned
that I don't want to lose emails from my friends, including all the folks
on this list so I sent out the test email. Looks like it's all working
fine now and I might just be able to keep my original email address after
all.
I did learn one nasty thing in the process: When you receive what looks
like a legitimate advertizement email and it has an "unsubscribe" link on
it ... DO NOT CLICK IT! It confirms to the spammer that this is a live
victim and active email address and it may well triple the number of spams
you get. That's how it began for me.
Best wishes,
Fred

HI Fred and all,
Recently I wound up on the list of one of the worst spammers on the
planet... Few days ago, I think I found the correct combination of
tools available on my email server and it appears to be working ...
My solution has been to have Gmail heck all my email accounts and I read
them via Gmail IMAP using Thunderbird.
Gmail filters are 99.9+% accurate. They get all the Spam and only
occasionally do I find even one email of slightly marginal interest in
the Spam folder.
That means Google reads all my email, though. I imagine they get
together with the NSA every so often for a good chuckle.
