The mini-conference will take place on August 5, 2022, the day before the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association. We are living through a period of rapid change which presents new theoretical puzzles and calls us to rethink assumptions and traditional approaches in our discipline. For this mini-conference, we are especially interested in panels and papers that challenge existing orthodoxies in the field, articulate novel theoretical and methodological contributions, and examine lesser-studied empirical terrains, both temporal and geographic. We welcome submissions from scholars who have not yet found a place in the mainstream of the discipline or CHS subfield, including scholars who engage current issues from a historically-situated perspective. The mini-conference is open to scholars of all levels, and we especially encourage graduate students and junior scholars to submit. Given the conference’s theme, we are especially interested in work exploring omissions, legacies, and afterlives. This can include more conventional historical data-driven work but also work on the present that takes seriously questions of continuity and change. Potential topics for panels or papers might include, but are not limited to: slavery, indenture, and abolition; race, racism and coloniality; migration and citizenship; gender and sexuality; methodological innovations in comparative-historical research; capitalism and wealth inequalities old and new; and health, medicine, and disease. As we convene again after a few years’ hiatus, we want to facilitate a more intimate gathering. Therefore, we will not be running concurrent sessions. Rather, we will hold four panels over the course of the day. We will close the mini-conference with a town hall to synthesize the conversations of the day and discuss the agenda for comparative historical sociology moving forward. Individual paper submissions should include an abstract of no longer than 500-1000 words. Submissions of complete panels are also welcome. Proposals for panels should include these materials for each participant, as well as a description of the overarching concerns of the panel. However, keeping in mind that we are limited to four panels for the day, we ask that you contact the Organizing Committee in advance if you wish to submit a panel proposal. Location and costs: While we hope to welcome everyone in person (in Los Angeles, California), the location and mini-conference participation fees are TBA, based on the state of the pandemic. We intend to keep fees as minimal as possible. Only faculty will be charged fees.
