The MPG figures seem to be low so I would assume either really bad
headwinds/seas or heavy use of stabilizers.
It sounds like the boat was very well maintained to have no problems over
this course in those seas".
Dennis replies...
Active fin stabilizers. We used them 99.9% of the time. Once in a while
we'd turn them off when if it got a little calmer and the person on watch
would hear from below, "What the hells going on up there?"
Not so much head seas, but currents on the nose kept us slower. Although
the passage north Abacos to New York in early June resulted in:
Actual consumption statistics:
945 nautical miles
150.5 engine hours, 6 days plus 6 hours
779 gallons fuel incl. genset use at approx.
3 hours daily for 7 days
1.21 miles per gallon
5.17 gallons per hour
6.28 miles per hour
1550 estimated average engine rpm
Southbound, without a female crew on board, we tended to use the laundry
facilities (read genset) considerably less.
The above is almost the same as the south bound reported a few days ago.
But, still not bad for a heavy 55 foot loaded to the bootstripe.
A Nordhavn 57 I crewed on with Peter Pisciotta a couple of years ago
realized the following from Dana Point, CA to Miami.
Final totals
Days at sea 26
Main engine hours 521
Nautical miles traveled 4497
Fuel consumed 2964
Gallons per hour 5.69
Miles (n) per gallon 1.51
Again, the reading are from the digital readouts on the engine and GPS
miles traveled. Some errors may creep in. We then had very headseas heading
up the Carribean for 5-6 days on that trip.
But, after a long cruise across the South Pacific in a sailboat a few years
ago, then traveling several long passages on a stabilized trawler, I'm sold
on the concept of stabilized motor vessels.
Having said that, inland cruising on the ICW, New York State Canals, Great
Lakes, and Canadian Canals is hard to beat for hospitality, low cost, no
weather constraints, water you can swim in without a shower afterward, a
flat level platform to walk on, and walking off the boat daily for an
evening cocktail and meal someone else cooks has a lot to offer! See my
website below for several articles on inland cruising in 2006.
Best to all!
