Thursday June 27th 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. The Puyallup River Watershed Council Presents: The Air - Water Connection WHEN: Thursday, June 27th, 2013, 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. WHERE: Puyallup City Hall - Council Chambers, 5th Floor 333 South Meridian, Puyallup, WA 98371 WHAT: Wood smoke is a big source of air pollution, as well as having an impact on water quality in the watershed. Wood smoke contains fine particles, toxic chemicals and cancer-causing substances that cause human health problems and water pollution. The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) is improving watershed health by addressing wood smoke. PSCAA monitors air quality and implements pollution-reducing programs. UW Tacoma is conducting research on local air pollution patterns and their connection to wood smoke. Both PSCAA and UW Tacoma are focused on reducing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other pollutants in the aquatic environment. Erik Saganic, Air Resources Specialist, PSCAA Erik will explain the connection between air quality and water quality, and will discuss PAHs, their sources and why they matter. Justin Miller-Schulze, PhD, Postdoctoral Researcher, UW Tacoma / Center for Urban Waters Justin will give an overview of air quality sampling and analysis being conducted at the Center for Urban Waters by UW Tacoma. Melissa Paulson, Communications Specialist, PSCAA Melissa will give an update on new wood smoke programs and share lessons learned from the "AirSafe Pierce County" outreach campaign.
