Lulzbot Taz 6 teaching and learning

Hi All,

I hope you're all doing well.

I'm not getting much help from Lulzbot tech support.

At our small, public library we have an old Taz 6.

I'm trying to teach kids (and kids at heart) the vlauer of 3D prtingint
leik learning hwo to mearues things.

It's not taught at all schools or at home.

We didn't have a manual for the Taz 6 by the time I arrived at the library'

I would so appreciate your helpful thoughts and suggestions.

If I want to elevate the nozzle, which do I choose? X? or Y? or Z? In
Motion on the Knob?

I did slice the gcode of a Thingiverse file and saved it to the SD card.

I then inserted the SD card into the Taz 6, Chose Nozzle - Standard and
then chose Print from Media and chose that gcode file but it barely spits
out filament and only enough to print a basic outline of the figure.

I figured I then needed to clean out the nozzle which is too close to the
bed to clean.

Hence, I need to elevate the nozzle to clean it.

Also, for some reason the temp of the nozzle never raised above 140 degrees
when I need it to be 210 degrees.

I'm not sure how to raise the temp on the printer itself and not on the PC
in Cura running W11?

Thank you ever so much for all your kind help.

Charles.

I don't know much about that printer, but their store page at
https://lulzbot.com/store/taz-6 seems to have a number of documents,
including a 100 page user manual.

ciao,
Torsten.

To raise the nozzle you need to increase Z.

It may well be possible to control the temperature on the printer, but
controlling it in the slicer is the usual way.

If you set it on the printer, then you have to set it every time you
print that object.  If you set it from the slicer then the setting is in
the gcode and you can just print it over and over again.

Also, the gcode probably will include the temperature, so there's a
decent chance that if you try to set it on the printer, and you don't do
it at the right point in the process, the gcode setting will replace
your manual setting.

Similarly for speeds and, well, everything.

This is awesome! It would be so cool to have a Taz 6 at my library! Unfortunately a lot of publicly accessible printers don't get used because it requires too much learning.

"If I want to elevate the nozzle, which do I choose? X? or Y? or Z? In Motion on the Knob?"

The answer is z, but more importantly is that you have a lot of stuff to learn before you're likely to succeed. Some options:

  • youtube videos (search 3-d printing introduction)
  • your local maker space, if there's is one
  • community meetups.
  • Lulzbot, sometimes
  • If you have the right kind of microcenter near by, you might find the right kind of nerd there who can help :)

We've had some contact with the current Lulzbot support. Are you unable to reach them, or unable to get usable answers? Maybe we can help.

Where are you located? I'd be happy to look up resources.

I own a Lulzbot Taz 6, and I have found Lulzbot's support to be
outstanding.  But I think that is because I was asking questions about
their hardware rather than about the general process of 3D printing.

I agree with the others about important steps and resources.

A couple of YouTuber's that I have found very helpful over the years.
Maker's Muse.  He is very skilled and helpful.  He has a playlist called 3D
printing 101 that might have some helpful videos for you
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTCCNNvHC8PDR_jQy609toqq8EAfhiOOL

Thomas Salanderer is also very helpful.
Here is his getting started playlist.
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDJMid0lOOYnkcFhz6rfQ6Uj8x7meNJJx

There are also guides for all the common problems that users run into, and
how to fix.  Here are some
https://www.simplify3d.com/resources/print-quality-troubleshooting/
https://www.matterhackers.com/articles/3d-printer-troubleshooting-guide
https://all3dp.com/1/common-3d-printing-problems-troubleshooting-3d-printer-issues/

If there are any particular questions about the Taz6 I can answer, ask away.
Best wishes!

Kevin
