Northwest Product Stewardship Council Update

September 12, 2008

Get on the Product Stewardship Bus! Take a Virtual Tour of British
Columbia's Stewardship Programs

The Northwest Product Stewardship Council hosted a day-long tour in
October 2007 to learn more about British Columbia's successful product
stewardship programs for handling difficult to manage products such as
used paint, electronics, beverage containers and pharmaceuticals. Now
you can take the virtual tour by watching the 27 minute video, Get on
the Product Stewardship Bus
http://www.productstewardship.net/BCTourPresentations.html .

New to Product Stewardship and Extended Producer Responsibility?

Watch Annie Leonard's 20 minute Story of Stuff video
http://www.storyofstuff.com/  and learn about the underside of US
production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the
connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues,
and encourages change.

Stay Informed about Product Stewardship Policy and Programs

Check out the NWPSC calendar of product stewardship events
http://www.productstewardship.net/calendar.html  such as the upcoming
SWANA e-session focused on Household Hazardous Waste Management which
includes Lauren Cole's, a NWPSC member, presentation "Local Governments
Promote Producer Responsibility for CFLs". Or the City of Toronto's
Packaging Waste Reduction Forum: Voluntary vs. Regulatory Tools to
Promote Waste Reduction.

Electronics Recycling Coming to Washington and Oregon

In January 2009, electronics product stewardship legislation goes into
effect. Manufacturers will offer recycling at no cost in both states.
Washington and Oregon have chosen to use similar names and logos to help
consumers find a consistent message. Below is the E-Cycle Washington
http://www.ecyclewashington.org/  logo. See the Oregon Department of
Environmental Quality http://www.deq.state.or.us/lq/electronics.htm
for more information about the Oregon E-Cycles program.
