Nordhavn Atlantic Rally

If you'd like a CD copy of the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally operations manual (about 300 pages) and/or a copy of the 75-minute DVD covering the rally, e-mail amy@nordhavn.com and ask.  There is no charge.

The ops manual was written specifically for the rally and is very much oriented to the rally and the port visits in Bermuda, Horta and Gibraltar, but there's lots of useful information there for anyone interested in offshore voyaging in small motor yachts.  I think members of this forum will find it a good resource.  Bruce Kessler's DVD on the rally "Living the Dream" is entertaining and informative.

Along with Jim Leishman, Bruce Kessler, Mike Martus, Amy Zahra and Jenny McCauley Stern, I was a member of the NAR organizing committee.  My assignment was to  handle most of the rally planning and advance arrangements, put together the ops manual, and serve as advance team leader for the rally, and travel to each port and make the necessary arrangements.

John Harris is right: it was the people and the camaraderie that made the NAR such a great experience for most everyone, but there was a lot to be said for safety in numbers and knowing that someone within easy VHF range was there to assist, amuse or entertain you--or help you troubleshoot a problem-prone piece of gear or system.  The long list of NAR requirements may have been overkill, but the proof is in the pudding: all 18 yachts and 95 or so crewmembers crossed the Atlantic and arrived safely.
