Just heard the USCG information broadcast on the VHF. This is a major
issue for people transiting the ICW through North Carolina.

I guess this is in addition to the LNM which says:
"SECTOR NORTH CAROLINA
. North Carolina
AIWW - Alligator River - US 64 (swing) Bridge - Through 30 SEP 11, one side
of the swing bridge opening will be
blocked by barges."

I have just confirmed with the bridge via phone that it is indeed closed for
emergency maintenance. The bridge tender did not have an estimate on the
length of the closure.

Luckily, conditions are okay for going around through Pamlico Sound for the
next couple of days...

Spoke with the bridge again at 2pm and repairs are expected to be completed
today. A brief opening was made to allow a few boats through. The plan was
to close the bridge again for the balance of the afternoon to complete
repairs. They do not expect to have any delays tomorrow or the balance of
the week.
