Packless Shaft Seal

Chuck,

I have one on my current boat and for 4 years have had not a single
problem.

My last boat was a 1989 45" Californian MY with twin engines. I had  PSS
seals put on it at a time (2005) that turned out to be a shortly before I
sold it and bought my tug. It was not a straight forward job on the '89  model.

The first thing that happened was that one of the shafts was  jammed in the
coupler. Apparently the PO had run aground which slightly twisted  the
shaft inside the coupler. That was an extra 4 or 5 hours of labor. The  mechanic
almost quit over this issue so the yard manager was mad at me and my  boat.
I'm sure that I paid for him to get un mad.

Second thing was that the old packing glands had worn small grooves in  the
shafts so they had to cut the fiberglass shaft tubs to get a smooth  area
where the seal would be. Another 8 hours extra labor.

It was in a good but expensive yard so the bill was about twice what they
estimated on the front end.

Good luck
