Yesterday, Oct. 27th Bob Tyler, Jenny Bull, Owen Moorhouse and I found a nice male Brewer’s Blackbird on Gibraltar Point on and beside Lakeshore Ave. approx. 50m west of the path to the Lighthouse.
We watched this bird in the rain as it strolled along the Ave. and along the grass on both sides of the road.
A nice bird that showed it’s very bright and glossy looking blue back, long legs, more of an upright shape and a small / short beak but the whitish eye helped to clinch the sighting for us.
Below are some of the other birds we found before and during the wet walk back to the Ward’s ferry. Many of the smaller species were undercounted due to the rain that finally said, go home and there were many large flocks of unidentified waterfowl far out over the lake.
18 Trumpeter Swans, Northern Shovelers, Gadwalls, 18 White-winged Scoters, 16 Hooded Mergansers, 35+ Bufflehead, large flocks of red-breasted Mergansers over the lake, Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, Great Black-backed Gull, 2 Belted Kingfishers, Red-bellied Woodpecker, only 262 Black-capped Chickadees on and over the islands, undercounted for sure, White-breasted Nuthatches, Brown Creeper, Winter Wrens, both Kinglets, 9 Hermit Thrushes, 20+ Yellow-rumped Warblers, Tree, Chipping, Swamp, Song, White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos.
PS – Tomorrow. Thursday only due to ferry dock repairs at Ward’s Island there will be a ferry to and from Hanlan’s Point - The first boat to Hanlan's will be at 9:30AM and the last boat will leave at 4PM unless this news is as inaccurate as often happens much like daily weather reports.
