Re: Natural Gas as a Marine Fuel

Shell and Wartsila have teamed up to increase the use of LNG as a marine
fuel driven by cost and environmental considerations. Interesting
announcement from Wartsila here:
http://www.wartsila.com/en/press-releases/wartsila-and-shell-sign-co-operati
ve-agreement-to-promote-use-of-lng-as-a-marine-fuel

“Clean, safe natural gas represents a true shipping paradigm shift; years
ago it was sail to steam, then came the move from steam to diesel, and now
it’s a new era for gas propulsion,” says Jaakko Eskola, Group Vice
President, Wärtsilä Ship Power.

No connection just of interest. As I am involved in new shipbuilding this
looks like obsolescence being used to kick start the stalled shipbuilding
industry!

Kind regards

Lest anyone think this will lead to a recreationl boat fuel alternative  be
aware  that  storage and fuel transfer would pose  a considerable cost to a
small craft  marina so it does not  look cost effective.
LNG makes sense for a LNG carrier where normal cargo boil off provides a
ready source of fuel. Elimination of  space  for bunker C fuel tanks  also
lowers construction cost. Unfortunately this is not  something transferable
to small craft construction.

Dear all,

Ipagaz is offering LPG gas here in Turkey in 12 and 24 kg bottles
delivered to you dockside.

I have seem people take 4 of the large ones on board and use all 4 in
one day,. It was a sea ray type boat, two gas engines converted to LPG/
gasoline. Gas tanks NOT yet removed.

I estimate they pay about 50% less than if they were using gasoline
only.

But, they also admit that they "drove faster" knowing the LPG was
cheaper....

95 Octane unleaded gas here is ~ $9.80 a gallon at the fuel dock.
