on the USS McCain disaster.  It is a scary read.  But I know a lot of
boaters who do not fully understand their nav systems...including me.  But
we can all "dumb it down" (go to manual steering and throttles) when
navigation gets tricky.  Neither the McCain or the Boeing 737 Max could do
that when needed.  Again, scary!
Merry Christmas all!

Thanks for sharing this Bob.  You are right, when in doubt, manual operation is my mode.  As a matter of fact, I am surprised how rarely I used autopilot on this trip south so far.  Long straight stretches and off-shore runs, yes but mostly manual steering.

Steve,

Congrats on your retirement as Commodore.  I am sure the Club misses you!

While I do not hesitate to hit the STANDBY button on the autopilot when I
get confused, I generally ALWAYS use the AP.  I even use the power steering
mode while docking and do not touch the wheel.  BUT, the difference is
speed, I think.  Things happen A LOT faster on NO REGRETS.

Merry Christmas to you and all the family!

BTW, 15 years with my Super MAX anchor!  Still the one!

Bob

Thanks Bob.  It is nice indeed being the “Past” Commodore rather than the Commodore.

Yes, things do happen rather quickly when at cruising speed.  Sounds like your autopilot (AP) is much more sophisticated and reliable than mine.  Actually mine is okay as long as I engage and disengage only.  When I try to turn the dial to adjust, it is unreliable and sometimes jumps 10-20 degrees rather than the 1-2 I want.  Therefore, when I use the AP I steer to course, engage, and disengage to adjust course.  Pain.

We are at anchor in Key Biscayne (arrived yesterday) and will leave 28 December for Marathon.  The SuperMAX has held us firm in all these different areas of “blow” and wave action down the ICW.  Now if it could just solve the slapping of waves on the hull!

Sorry we missed you when we went through Jupiter.  Happy holidays and Happy New Year to you and all on T&T.
