Comments: CT Ornithological Assoc. Annual Shorebird Workshop, led by C.
Loscalzo, P. Comins, F. Mantlik, N. Bonomo, F. Gallo. New this year was a 1.5
hour indoor slide presentation first by PC & FM. Then we went out to the beach
and sandbars to view the high-tide (12:17) concentration of shorebirds. We
initially stayed together as one group, but eventually split up into 3 groups
(sandbar, beach, outer marsh platform). Twelve species shorebirds (39 species
overall), including nice views of all the common migrant species. The last of
us left about 3:15pm. Weather: sunny, becoming cloudy to bright overcast,
70-75F, calm-light wind. Great light conditions for viewing.

Common Loon 1 One basic-plumaged bird seen by some before the start of the
workshop.
Double-crested Cormorant 40
Great Egret 8
Black-crowned Night-Heron 1 adult in marsh
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron 5 all juveniles, in marsh
Osprey 5
Black-bellied Plover 137 actual count. all stages of adult plumage.
American Golden-Plover 1 adult in mostly breeding plumage; a different bird
than the one at nearby Sikorsky Airport (Stratford) yesterday and today.
Semipalmated Plover 120 estimated number, virtually all adults
American Oystercatcher 7
Spotted Sandpiper 5
Willet (Eastern) 7 5 juveniles together on sandbar; two adults at tip of
point.
Ruddy Turnstone 13
Red Knot 1 adult still with some orange-red color on belly. First one
reported here this fall.
Sanderling 100 estimate.
Semipalmated Sandpiper 700 estimate. good views of adults (mostly) and a
number of juveniles.
