Does anyone know how Skyroam operates? Is it just a cell phone amplifier?
Do you need to be near a cell tower for it to work? In that case it would
not be useful in remote locations.

Skyroam is a provider that uses cell towers. We have tried it and still have the device solely as a backup. The option to just purchase day passes makes it good as a backup.
BUT... as something to use for day to day Internet .... NO! Their so called unlimited plan caps you at 1GB and the speed becomes virtually unusable.
For a better service, look at Finally WiFi...  finallywifi.com  We are very please with their truly unlimited plan!

It's just a cellular hot spot, and not a very good one at that. They
have roaming arrangements with carriers across their operating area. As
others have noted, the plan has serious limitations that make it a bad
choice for many.

If you are looking for something that works offshore or otherwise away
from cell towers, you need a satellite modem. The "Sky" moniker in the
Skyroam name misleads many to think it might be a satellite-based
service, but it is not, and the word is meaningless in this context.

Unless you have multiple tens of thousands to spend on gear, and
thousands to spend per month, you will not "surf" the Internet on
satellite service. You can get limited email, weather files, and the
like for a reasonable outlay. Many options out there.

If you are, however, looking for high-speed cellular Internet, I can
recommend you research your options relative to your needs by starting here:

Hope that helps.

Might want to consider GOTw3.  Because of where we live in a rural setting, we have limited internet options and, until now, all have been less than satisfactory.  GOTw3 was recommended and we tried it (no long term commitment required).  Excellent.  On November 10, 2019, we started about voyage down the ICW to Stock Island.  We took the GOTw3 with us and powered it off our inverter.  The only time we lost internet was when we were 70 miles off shore in the Gulf of Mexico on a run from Key West to Ft. Myers.  Once we got closer to land, we had service.  In every anchorage, we had internet.

Along the way, a few other cruisers saw our setup and each bought one.  All are happy with their service.  The primary reason we wanted our own internet was not being able to rely on marina internet services and using a public or shared service.  We wanted our own private password protected service.  It also ran internet TV without an issue.

No affiliation, just a happy customer.
