I am a do-it-yourself kinda guy.... for years I have been thinking about building my own I infrared /camera /video screen forward looking system.  I have those cheap color security cameras (about $35) all around my house.  They have IR LEDs for nite vision but they only work for about 20 feet or so (contrary to what is advertised).  I few years back I bought 150 LED IR illuminator to supplement the range.   My entire front yard is now bright as day light (in black and white on the video screen).  I was thinking of mounting a huge illuminator on my mast to "shine" forward; put the camera up there as well...
I estimate I would be able to "see" about 200 feet...  my main use/concern is to look for/avoiding crab pots in the Florida gulf coast.  Also do not want to destroy my nite vision with a huge conventional spot light.. Too cheap to buy one of the hand held nite vision devises... I figure I could build it for less than $300...
Anyone done this?
