A large (at least 4 1/2'), dead Leatherback Turtle was on the beach about
75 yards East of the nesting spit at Milford Point this morning. I think
this stretch of beach is called Cedar Beach. I approached it but did not
notice any ropes or buoys attached to the body. I didn't get that close, so
maybe I just missed seeing any ropes that were there. Police and a reporter
for NEWS 12 were at the scene.

After Steve Spector's report of this turtle yesterday I did pass along the
info to a colleague who contact people at Mystic (searesearch.org) They
were going to notify their stranding coordinator. I'm not sure where it
went from there but I was told they are the group who deals with these
creatures.

I could not contact SEANET regarding the Leatherback Turtle, because their
website is shut down for maintenance until October 12. However, I did hear
on NEWS 12 that "experts' had seen the turtle and estimated it to have been
about 150 years old. No mention of who those "experts" were, but NEWS 12
reporter said that the station would follow up to see what the cause of
death was, if at all possible.

Thank You Charlie and everyone. So sad to see this happen...made me
think back a month or so when we saw seven of them from the cod boat
inside BLock Island on the way in. What a marvelous animal!

FYI Fishermen in the eastern sound had been reporting a couple of these over the past month or so, alive, mid-sound.
I do not spend any time in the eastern sound so I do not know how typical that is.

Hey everyone,
Thanks for all the updates on the turtle. I managed to get out yesterday to see it. It is truly an awe-inspiring creature, and was also terribly sad to see it dead. Since there has been some discussion about letting various authorities know, I just wanted to pass along some information for people concerned about what is happening with the turtle. First of all, since yesterday morning there has been a lot of discussion amongst various organizations and authorities on what is happening with it. At this point the resolution is that the Peabody Museum of Natural History is working with the city of Milford and other regulatory agencies to have it removed and used for education and science. While it's terrible to see one of these magnificent and endangered organisms dead, at least we can use this as an opportunity to educate the public about these magnificent creatures.
Best,
Jacob
