National Coalition for Literacy Discussion List
View all threadsMembers,
Our colleague Jocelyn Bissonette at NAFIS has sent me this for NCL members’ consideration. It is a sign-on letter urging Congressional appropriators to reject the Administration’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget proposal to eliminate funding for Impact Aid Federal Properties. (Impact Aid provides funding to over 1,300 public school districts nationwide that educate military children, children residing on Indian lands, children living in federal low-rent housing facilities, children of civilian employees of the federal government, and children in school districts with significant tax-exempt federal property.)
Since NAFIS is not an NCL member, and because this issue is far outside NCL’s area of interest and expertise, I am NOT recommending that we sign on. However, if there is a groundswell of support from you all to do so, obviously it’s not my call and I’m happy to sign us on.
The main reason I am passing this along is because I noticed that at least one NCL member signed on last year and I also know that some NCL members have programs on Indian lands, so I wanted to let you know about it in case any of your organizations wanted to sign on. Details below.
If you do sign on, can you let Jocelyn know I sent you her way? Thanks.
Jeff

Colleagues:
Last year your organization joined 70 others to (successfully!) oppose the elimination of Impact Aid federal properties payments in the Administration’s budget request. The elimination was included in the FY17 budget request, so I’m seeking your support again. The letter, attached, is substantively the same as last year with minor date/FY changes.
The deadline to sign is Friday, April 15. Please let me know exactly how you’d like your organization’s name to appear on the letter and feel free to distribute the letter to other national and state organizations. I am not accepting changes to the letter at this time.
Thanks for the consideration,
Jocelyn Bissonnette
