read the question. Or, perhaps, I didn't phrase it correctly. Allow me to try

Someday, I want to own a larger boat than Seahorse (53'). I have no West
Coast experience -- and, I'm not used to waiting for any reasonable wx here in
the East. So, I'm trying to understand. I realize that Alanui is a 40' boat
and would have to wait for conditions. I'm not attempting to use her as an
example- the wait for wx simply prompted the question.
THE QUESTION:
What type/size boat would have been able to go without waiting. For
instance, I'd think a Watson 72 would not have to wait.

John

John,
Some years ago there were photos of a well known west coast boat, MoJo, based in Newport Beach, printed in Pacific Skipper, among others. The "professional" captain (unlicensed), with George C. Scott and his wife aboard, chose to leave Morro Bay after a storm. The boat took seas over the bow at the mouth of the bay that removed most everything above the shear line. As I recall the boat was about eighty-five feet long (later lengthened to one hundred and five feet). Others were making the passage north at the very time just off Morro Bay.
I don't think its a matter of just size but exactly where you are and what you are facing right there.
Photos of the moment are here.

you may want to specify whether you want the answer as if it was from a
delivery captain -- who as i read the thread -- would not want any risk of
something falling and causing some damage, as opposed to a decision that an
owner would reasonably make if he was going to move the boat.
just my 2 cents

John,
That's a pretty clear statement, and not inflammatory at all. We suspect
that the answer cannot be as clear, as in our experience the waiting has to
do more with the human factor than with the boat. In other words, the boat
will generally take worse weather than we are willing to tolerate.
Moreover, each person will have a different notion of what a tolerable level
of discomfort is.
To illustrate, we were boating through the wilds of Papua New Guinea with a
very well built mono hull cruising sailboat (a steel Swanson) and three
sailing cats (two Fastbacks and a custom design, all fairly light). Having
been stuck behind an island for days, waiting for good weather, one morning
it was our turn to venture out and test the water. It was rough, really
rough, with waves way higher than AKAMA (a KK Whaleback). We reported same
and said that we were going to go, as we knew it would not likely get worse
and we only had about fifty miles to run to the next anchorage. The
sailboats headed out and we all set off. After an hour, nearly everyone on
the cats was sick as a dog and decided to turn back. We reluctantly did so
too, so as not to split from the group.
Concerning size, we have no experience with anything over 35 tons, so cannot
comment with confidence. However, we have been passagemaking in remote
areas for some time and do have an observation. When the going gets really
rough, it seems to us that everyone stays home, regardless of size. Many
times we have been stuck in various ports around the world and all of us,
from 30-footers to hundred footers were "waiting for a weather window". The
big yachts never seem to leave first. We suspect that when it is
uncomfortable for us it is likely uncomfortable for everyone.
We hope you find the right boat; keep asking these good questions.
Cheers,
Maurice & Louise-Ann
MV AKAMA

We took delivery of a new Nordhavn 57 in Dana Point, CA, in May, 1999,
and proceeded north to Seattle. As I recall, the trip took seven days.
We had gale force winds on our nose for two days and slowed to about
four knots. During this time the seas were 8' to 12' with the
occasional 16 footer. We were uncomfortable but not unsafe. I wouldn't
voluntarily expose myself to these conditions again, but if I had to, at
least I'd know the boat could take it. I don't think I'd want to be in
anything smaller or perhaps as important, lighter.
