Colleagues,
Today marks one year out from Census Day 2020, when the 2020 Census will be fully under way. Given the central role of the Census in ensuring equitable representation in Congress for all communities, as well as in determining the allocation of more than $800 billion in federal resources, a fair and accurate count is essential. For this reason, civil rights and human rights groups across the country have designated today as a national day of action to focus attention on ways of ensuring that all are counted.
The importance of an accurate Census for adult literacy and adult education can hardly be overstated. However, we face specific challenges in ensuring that adult learners are enouraged to participate in the Census without fear, have access to supports that can help them do so, and understand the difference between legitimate Census activities and scams that use the Census as a cover.
Today at the http://www.coabe.org several NCL members will present a panel on ways of preparing for the Census (11:15 AM Central time in Galerie 6, for those who are here in New Orleans). The panel's slides will be available on the COABE website after the conference.
I'm also forwarding a list of some other activities and resources, compiled by our colleagues at Census Counts. I encourage you to take action, today and over the next 12 months, to say #CountMeIn!
