Attempt to install CSpace on Ubuntu on VirtualBox on OS X failed

At Richard's suggestion, I have tried to get a local installation of CSpace running on VirtualBox on my OS X machine.
I have VirtualBox and Ubuntu 1404.4 server installed with optional packages that include LAMP, PostgreSQL, and Tomcat.  Perhaps this last was a bad choice based on what I am seeing.
I have tried to run the install puppet script twice using the instructions on this page:

https://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Automated+installer+for+CollectionSpace+4.3#AutomatedinstallerforCollectionSpace4.3-Runningtheinstaller

After seeing a bunch of warnings and not figuring out how to scroll up on this keyboard, I ran it again and piped to tee so I could log the screen messages like this:

sudo ./bootstrap-cspace-modules.sh -y | tee cspace_install.log

This file on my personal webserver will allow you to see the messages.  (I edited out the color control codes that made the text hard to read).

http://keeline.com/cspace_install.log

May I have some suggestions to clear this up?
I figure that one error is cascading the rest and it may be related to Tomcat.  Perhaps the Ubuntu version is not liked by CSpace?_____
Assuming I can get a local instance installed.  I am guessing that my next steps will include:

  • Take a VirtualBox snapshot of the server.
  • Attempt to start the various services in the instructions.
  • Take a VirtualBox snapshot of the server.
  • Follow the Clone Tenant instructions with a target museum name of sdchm.
  • Take a VirtualBox snapshot of the server.
  • Figure out how to create a suitable repository in github.
  • Pass along suitable deployment instructions to our sysadmin to install on our production server.

There are more unknowns in this list than I am happy with considering the other things I am trying to accomplish with the data import from a legacy system, customization of the input form, and creation of a couple dynamic term lists for storage/display locations and Chinese dynasties.
I appreciate any help the members of the forum can provide._____
If I need to start over with the Ubuntu install with specific optional package selections and instructions, I'd like to see that.   James D. Keeline

James,

My first suggestion is to create your VirtualBox without LAMP, PostgreSQL, and Tomcat.  Perhaps the SSH server is a useful addition though.  The Puppet installer will add (should add) everything that is needed to install and run CollectionSpace.

I'll go ahead and try to reproduce your issue right now.

James,

I just noticed the log info you sent contains build information for v4.2 and not v4.3 as expected.  I checked the wiki page for the installer instructions and noticed it contained a link to the v4.2 bootstrap script instead of the v4.3 bootstrap script.  I updated the page to point to the correct bootstrap script for the v4.3 release.  Here is a link to the updated wiki page:

https://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Automated+installer+for+CollectionSpace+4.3

Go to the section "Downloading the bootstrap script" to get the correct bootstrap script.  Hopefully, deleting the old one from your existing VirtualBox and running the v4.3 bootstrap script will work.  Otherwise, you'll need to start with a fresh VirtualBox/Ubuntu.  Since you added "LAMP, PostgreSQL, and Tomcat", you probably want to start with a new box anyway.  By the way, one you create a clean/fresh box, I highly recommend using VirtualBoxes "snapshot" feature so you can easily and quickly rollback changes and things like failed installations.

James,

Yuk, sorry about all the typos in my emails below -trying to do too many things at once.

So updating the bootstrap script to the v4.3 version worked for me.  I did not have to start from scratch.  I just deleted the old bootstrap script and replaced it with the v4.3 version and re-ran it.  Everything seems to be working.

Once the installation is successful and you've started CollectionSpace on the VirtualBox instance, you can connect to it from your host machine by mapping the VirtualBox instance's port 8180 -see Settings->Network->Port Forwarding.  You can use 8180 for both the host port and the guest port if you want.

Then just use a browser on your host machine to connect to http://localhost:8180/collectionspace/ui/core/html/index.html

I will try the alternate script on the page you linked.
While I was waiting to see this reply I did a fresh install of Ubuntu with only OpenSSH as an optional package.  I took a snapshot of this.  It seemed like a good idea and I'm glad to see that you confirm this.
I went go back to the snapshot and used the 4.3 script.  That seemed odd to me as well since we had talked about 4.3 being current.
This log seems more successful:
http://keeline.com/cspace_install_3.log

After a number of failed attempts, I was able to get my Mac to talk to CollectionSpace on the local install.  These were the networking instructions that ultimately worked:

  *  Take a VirtualBox snapshot of the server.
  *  Follow the Clone Tenant instructionshttps://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Creating+your+new+tenant with a target museum name of sdchm.
  *  Take a VirtualBox snapshot of the server.
  *  Figure out how to create a suitable repository in github.
  *  Pass along suitable deployment instructions to our sysadmin to install on our production server.

There are more unknowns in this list than I am happy with considering the other things I am trying to accomplish with the data import from a legacy system, customization of the input form, and creation of a couple dynamic term lists for storage/display locations and Chinese dynasties.

I appreciate any help the members of the forum can provide.

If I need to start over with the Ubuntu install with specific optional package selections and instructions, I'd like to see that.

This log seems more successful: http://keeline.com/cspace_install_3.log After a number of failed attempts, I was able to get my Mac to talk to CollectionSpace on the local install.  These were the networking instructions that ultimately worked: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=40076  James D. I'll go ahead and try to reproduce your issue right now. -Richard ________________________________________ From: Talk <talk-bounces@lists.collectionspace.org> on behalf of James Keeline <james@keeline.com> Sent: Thursday, June 09, 2016 4:35 PM To: Talk Subject: [Talk] Attempt to install CSpace on Ubuntu on VirtualBox on OS X      failed At Richard's suggestion, I have tried to get a local installation of CSpace running on VirtualBox on my OS X machine. I have VirtualBox and Ubuntu 1404.4 server installed with optional packages that include LAMP, PostgreSQL, and Tomcat.  Perhaps this last was a bad choice based on what I am seeing. I have tried to run the install puppet script twice using the instructions on this page: https://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Automated+installer+for+CollectionSpace+4.3#AutomatedinstallerforCollectionSpace4.3-Runningtheinstaller After seeing a bunch of warnings and not figuring out how to scroll up on this keyboard, I ran it again and piped to tee so I could log the screen messages like this: sudo ./bootstrap-cspace-modules.sh -y | tee cspace_install.log This file on my personal webserver will allow you to see the messages.  (I edited out the color control codes that made the text hard to read). http://keeline.com/cspace_install.log May I have some suggestions to clear this up? I figure that one error is cascading the rest and it may be related to Tomcat.  Perhaps the Ubuntu version is not liked by CSpace? _____ Assuming I can get a local instance installed.  I am guessing that my next steps will include:   *  Take a VirtualBox snapshot of the server.   *  Attempt to start the various services in the instructions.   *  Take a VirtualBox snapshot of the server.   *  Follow the Clone Tenant instructions<https://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/DOC/Creating+your+new+tenant> with a target museum name of sdchm.   *  Take a VirtualBox snapshot of the server.   *  Figure out how to create a suitable repository in github.   *  Pass along suitable deployment instructions to our sysadmin to install on our production server.
