Jeff:
By the end of this year sounds encouraging although not the info I got
from my local Verizon store - mind you that doesn't mean much, they seem
to know just enough to sell the phones! 3G coverage over their same area
would be great (nice if they added in those holes in the Carolinas),
however I was wondering about the best way to buy it - it seems a little
dicey on the megabyte basis. And their packages combining unlimited high
speed data with voice still quite expensive....what are your thoughts
since your company obviously has a much bigger investment in this
technology than a single user like myself?
"My Verizon Corporate rep says their 3G upgrade will be completely in
place by the end of this year. The coverage will be anywhere they
already have a digital footprint now. "

Ron,
The guy I talk with is pretty high up in Verizon, he is involved with
planning and implementing this stuff and is high level tech support for
companies like the one I work with. I actually talked with him again
yesterday, he indicated the upgrade should be complete by mid June now. He
also indicated that the Georgia and Carolina situation is right on, but they
are buying out some smaller companies in that area and will add their
digital footprint soon.
The pricing is somewhat high. Unlimited runs us $99 a month, which you can
get as a consumer also (not really much of a break for corporate users). Our
companies application uses small bursty type of traffic, so we estimate
using the per mb plan will run about $40 per month. Much different from
surfing the web or getting a lot of email. I would suggest trying the per MB
pricing and see what your email bill will be. I'm hoping that pricing will
come down, AT&T is implementing their flavor of this too, but much behind
Verizon in the rollout.
I'm told you can get a phone with built in 1X modem and have two numbers and
two plans, one for data and one for the phone. This is somewhat expensive,
but if you want the service, you have to pay.
Jeff
